Bible Society of South Africa gifts Greek and Hebrew Bibles to GWC students

As part of the presentation, the Bible Society gifted Greek and Hebrew Bibles to first- and second-year Bachelor of Theology students respectively. These resources will play an important role in the students’ theological education as they learn to engage more deeply with Scripture in its original languages.

For students preparing for Christian ministry, the Bible is far more than simply an academic resource. It stands at the centre of their studies, spiritual formation and preparation to serve the Church. Access to the biblical text in Greek and Hebrew enables students to engage directly with the Scriptures in the languages in which they were originally written, strengthening their academic study and better equipping them for future ministry.

The gift also reflects the value of the established relationship between GWC and the Bible Society of South Africa. Through this partnership, BSSA has supported the College and its students for a number of years by helping to make Bibles and other Scripture resources available to those preparing for ministry.

The GWC library expressed its gratitude for the partnership and the contribution the Bible gifts make to students’ formation: “As the College’s library, we seek to provide students with the resources they need for their studies, and these Greek and Hebrew Bible gifts make a meaningful contribution to that work. We sincerely thank the Bible Society for their generosity and for investing in our students and their future ministry,” said Ledovrica Hendricks, Library Assistant. For the students receiving the Bibles, the gift has immediate practical value as well as significance for their future ministry.

First-year BTh student Joshua Okpanachi, who received a Greek Bible, explained: “As a first-year student beginning my journey into the original language of the New Testament, having a Greek Bible is an absolute necessity for my studies. Looking ahead to my second and third years, I will be working through John, 1 Corinthians, Romans, and Hebrews. More than that, I look forward to using this language in future ministry to preach and teach God’s Word faithfully. This gift is truly invaluable to me. Thank you so much for your generosity.”

For second-year BTh student Élie Ishara, receiving a Hebrew Bible will provide an opportunity to put classroom learning into practice: “I began learning elementary Biblical Hebrew this year, and now I can engage the text in its original language thanks to the good work of our lecturers. Having the actual Hebrew words will strengthen my study journey by allowing me to practise things that we have been learning in class.

“This Bible will also help me grow in my comprehension of the text and get closer to its true meaning. I would greatly appreciate receiving the Hebrew Bible. I am looking forward to practising Hebrew and gaining a deeper understanding of God’s Word.” The Bible Gift Presentation was an opportunity not only to distribute valuable study resources, but also to recognise the generosity of the Bible Society of South Africa and the significance of its investment in the next generation of Christian leaders. GWC is deeply grateful for this partnership and for BSSA’s commitment to supporting students as they grow in their understanding of Scripture and prepare to serve Christ and His church in communities across Africa and beyond.
