Master of Theology
The Master of Theology (MTh) prepares you to deepen your expertise and research in a specialised field, while equipping you to lead, teach, and make an impact in your church, denomination, or broader community.

Hyflex: This mode enables you to sign up to attend class or interact with your supervisor virtually or in person. Online class attendance is only available to students not staying in College residence.
Overview
The Master of Theology (MTh) builds on the BTh Hons degree, allowing you to deepen and specialise in a chosen area of theology. It equips graduates for leadership as specialists in the church and wider society.
The programme can open doors to new ministry or career opportunities and also prepare the way for PhD studies if you're interested in teaching or writing ministries. You can choose between a coursework-based pathway or a full dissertation, depending on your focus and goals.
As a graduate, you will gain the skills and confidence to independently:
- Analyse and interpret relevant primary and secondary Christian sources.
- Critically evaluate and apply Christian theology and ethics in an appropriate manner.
- Participate confidently in discussion and research into relevant issues and problems.
- Report their findings clearly in written and oral form.
Admission Requirements
- GWC BTh Hons degree or equivalent as determined by the Research Committee.
- Basic reading competency in either Biblical Greek or Classical Hebrew; the equivalent of 1-year full time. Please check the Prospectus for the ways in which this requirement can be met.
- Admission through Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) is permitted for a maximum of 10% of the enrolment for any year. See the Student Handbook for details of RPL procedures.
English Proficiency
Postgraduate courses require an IELTS score of 6.5 overall and 6.0 for the written element. This is equivalent to 232 in the computerised TOEFL test, 575 in the written TOEFL test or 90 – 91 in the internet based TOEFL test. Equivalent English language qualifications may be accepted.

Master of Theology Fees
Master of Theology Bursaries
Applicants who have been accepted into the Master of Theology programme may apply for bursary assistance. Bursaries are awarded on a needs-only basis and are usually only partial awards. GWC regrets that bursary funding cannot be offered to every bursary applicant.
International Students
All applicants who possess a foreign school leaving or post-school leaving qualification (achieved outside of South Africa) must submit an evaluation certificate from USAF (school-leaving qualification) or SAQA (post-school qualification/tertiary qualification). These certificates provide an evaluation of the equivalence of your qualification to the South African university system.
It will take 2-3 weeks to obtain an evaluation certificate from USAF; it will take 3-6 months to obtain an evaluation certificate from SAQA.
