Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)
The Doctor of Philosophy degree, as the highest available degree for theological and biblical studies, will qualify you for a vocation of teaching and research in theological institutions, and for the scholarly enhancement of Christian ministry.

Overview
GWC received accreditation for its PhD offering in 2025, and is pleased to be able to offer Master of Theology graduates the opportunity to pursue this advanced study option, which combines deep scholarly research with training in compelling writing and communication for service to the global Church. PhD graduates will:
- Exhibit mastery of methods and tools of theological research.
- Develop expertise in a selected field of biblical or theological study.
- Produce scholarly work that contributes to thought leadership and advancement of a field of study.
- Have a deep theological understanding in order to better serve in pastoral ministry, teaching, or further academic scholarship.
- Communicate effectively through writing and teaching.
Admission Requirements
- GWC BThHons degree (or equivalent as determined by the Faculty Board).
- Basic reading competency in either Biblical Greek or Classical Hebrew; the equivalent of 1-year full time. Please check the prospectus for the ways in which this requirement can be met.
- Admission through Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) is permitted for a maximum of 10% of the enrolment for any year. See the RPL Policy or Student Handbook for details of RPL procedures.
English Proficiency
Postgraduate courses require an IELTS score of 6.5 overall and 6.0 for the written element. This is equivalent to 232 in the computerised TOEFL test, 575 in the written TOEFL test or 90 – 91 in the internet based TOEFL test. Equivalent English language qualifications may be accepted.

Master of Theology Fees
Master of Theology Bursaries
Applicants who have been accepted into the Master of Theology programme may apply for bursary assistance. Bursaries are awarded on a needs-only basis and are usually only partial awards. GWC regrets that bursary funding cannot be offered to every bursary applicant.
International Students
An evaluation of an applicant’s highest qualification from the SA Qualifications Authority is required. This can take 3-6 months to acquire from SAQA. Alternatively, proof of a qualification completed at an ACTEA- accredited institution is needed, as well as proof of English language proficiency through the IELTS test.
Applications for exemption from testing can be made (with appropriate motivation) to the Faculty Board, whose decision is final. Further details may be obtained from the Assistant Registrar.
