Abstract:
Trauma is an inescapable reality in a broken world, touching individuals, families, churches, and communities in many different ways. This course provides an accessible introduction to understanding trauma, its effects, and the pathways to healing and resilience. Drawing on Evan Marbury’s Understanding Trauma and Resilience: A Guide for Counselors, Caregivers, and Ministers, students will explore key concepts in trauma, abuse, and trauma-informed care while considering the integration of psychology and Christian theology. Combining sound clinical insight with pastoral wisdom, the course will equip those seeking to serve in pastoral care, caregiving, and counselling to respond with greater compassion, discernment, and practical care. Participants will gain a deeper appreciation of both the devastating impact of trauma and the hope of restoration, resilience, and healing found in Christ.
Bio:
Rev. Dr Evan B. Marbury serves as Assistant Pastor of Christ Central Church in Durham, NC, USA, and is a licensed clinical mental health counselor. He graduated from Covenant Theological Seminary with a Master of Divinity and a Master of Arts in Counseling, and also earned a Doctor of Ministry in Counseling from Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary. He is the author of Understanding Trauma and Resilience: A Guide for Counselors, Caregivers, and Ministers (Baker, 2026).
