Teaching and learning for higher theological education (TALHITE)

Short Course in Theological Education Development Services* (TEDS) provides training in learning, teaching, and curriculum development for theological institutions. TALHITE is an online, professional development course for theological educators who are already engaged in teaching and learning in their institutions. This short course is certified by George Whitefield College in South Africa. 

*Short Courses are not accredited and do not lead to qualifications on National Qualifications Framework (NQF) but may be usable for recognition of prior learning.

OVERVIEW OF TALHITE ONLINE

Phase 1: Initial workshop (40 student hours)

A five-day course of online, real-time, interactive Zoom sessions. This phase includes self-instructional materials and aims to build competencies in teaching practice for theological education.

Areas of focus: Key Theological Dimensions; the Reflective Practitioner; Constructing Learning for Active Student Engagement.

Phase 2: The Teaching Lab (During term-time)

This phase consists of active learning through classroom practice over one term, based in the lecturer’s normal teaching situation.
Participants evaluate the effectiveness of their teaching, identify issues of student learning in context and compile a Personal Learning portfolio.

Phase 3: Deepening workshop (40 student hours)

This five-day course consists of more interactive, real-time Zoom sessions and self-instructional online materials.

Its purpose is to engage participants in their own professional development in becoming reflective practitioners and valuable resource people who enrich the quality of learning at an institutional level.

Areas of focus: Biblical Philosophy of Theological Education; Advancing Student Learning Capacities; Leadership for quality in higher education.

Introducing the TEDS facilitators

Rev Dr Richard Seed (Dick)

Rev Dr Richard Seed (Dick)

Richard (Dick) directs Theological Education Development Services (TEDS) which provides training and consultancy in teaching, learning, and curriculum development for theological colleges and Christian universities. Affiliated to GWC since 2018, TEDS was fully integrated into the college in 2023 when Dick was appointed to faculty. Dick pursued his initial theological studies in South Africa but completed his further studies in mission and theological education in the UK.

He joined Church Mission Society (UK) in 1999 and was involved in senior leadership in theological colleges and Christian universities in Nigeria, Ghana, Rwanda and Kenya. Dick leads 2025 PROSPECTUS | 13
TEDS and also teaches Christian Education and Mission subjects at GWC. His research interests are in cognitive contextualization and secularization in higher Christian education in Africa.

Dr Caroline Seed

Dr Caroline Seed

Caroline was a language teacher before joining the Church Mission Society in 1999. She then studied Mission and Dogmatics, obtaining a PhD in 2016. Caroline has served as a lecturer and senior academic administrator in theological colleges and Christian universities in Nigeria, Ghana, Rwanda and Kenya. Her role at GWC is as theological education consultant with Theological Education Development Services (TEDS). Caroline was appointed to faculty in 2023 and assists with postgraduate courses and research methodology. She supervises doctoral candidates for NWU (South Africa), Theological University of Apeldoorn (TUA) and Oxford Centre of Mission Studies (OCMS). Her research interests are the intersection between historical theology and mission and reading the Bible in missional contexts.

Mrs Karen Roe

Mrs Karen Roe

Karen Roe is the Pedagogy Manager for Local Leaders International, where she lectures and trains educators in higher theological education in and around Africa,  online and in the Pacific region. 

Karen, along with her husband (Rev. Dr Mike Roe) and 2 teenagers Amelia (16) and Mitchell (14), previously served as missionaries in Bible colleges in Namibia and South Africa for almost a decade.

Her role in Cape Town was most notably as a pedagogy training facilitator in the TEDS department at George Whitefield College. Her specialist interest areas include culturally and linguistically diverse learners (CALDs), best practices for adult learners, and assessment in higher theological education.

Mrs Karen Roe

REV DR THAPELO KHUMALO

After graduating from GWC, Thapelo served as a campus director with The Bible Talks student ministry at the University of KwaZulu Natal for 9 years. He also served as an assistant minister at Christ Church Glenwood (REACH SA) in KwaZulu Natal, Durban.

Thapelo’s MTh dissertation focused on the relationship between John Calvin’s theology and his pastoral ministry. His PhD thesis was on the role of the Holy Spirit in church unity in Calvin’s reply to Sadoleto.

He currently serves on the faculty of GWC, teaching in the disciplines of Practical Ministry and Church History. He is also pursuing a Postgraduate Diploma in Christian Higher Education, a field of significant interest to him.
