Aim

The GWC Honours degree equips you to face the challenges of our world with Bible-based and theologically robust answers. You’ll develop skills in independent research, learn to critically evaluate ideas, and be able to present yourself thoughtfully and persuasively. Whether tackling parts of the Bible that are difficult to understand, delving into church history and doctrine, or thinking through missiological or ethical issues, the honours degree will both broaden and deepen your knowledge.

CONTENT

The GWC Honours degree consists of five modules and a 12,000 word mini-dissertation on a topic of your choice. The modules are delivered by a combination of GWC’s own faculty and guest lecturers who are specialists in their fields from other parts of South Africa and the world. You will study modules in New Testament, Old Testament, Research Methods, and one other selected from Church History, Systematic or Pastoral Theology, Missiology, Homiletics, Hermeneutics, or Christian Ethics. The mini-dissertation is written under the personal guidance of a specialist in your chosen field.

DURATION OF STUDY

The GWC Honours degree is one year full time or two years part time. It is possible to extend this for longer periods if required.

Outcomes

The GWC Honours degree further enriches and develops those skills you have developed as an undergraduate in exegesis, theology, and ministry. In addition, it will introduce you to the skills required to pursue independent research and develop your ability to think critically and robustly about methodology, theory, and praxis. You will also practice presenting your ideas both in oral and written format, aiming for clarity, creativity, and simplicity of expression without becoming simplistic.

Completion of the GWC Honours degree meets the minimum entrance requirement for admission to a Master of Theology degree.
