HOW DO STUDENTS RAISE THEIR FEES?

Tax deductibility is possible for gifts to provide bursaries for students (South Africa, UK, USA and Australia), though unfortunately not for parents to help their own children.

South Africa

GWC is a registered Public Benefit Organization, a Section 21 Not for Profit Company, and is registered as a Non-Profit Organization. It is provisionally registered as a Private Higher Education Institution. It is therefore exempt from paying income tax, and a legitimate beneficiary of donations from charitable trusts etc.

Donations

Donations for operating costs can be made directly to the college. We are authorised to issue tax exemption receipts under Section 18A of the South African Income Tax Act.

GWC is a partner of African Enterprise, a charitable organization which issues tax deductible receipts for suitable projects. Gifts to AE should be designated: “For the education of disadvantaged African students at GWC.”
AE normally deducts a small handling charge (which goes to their other excellent work).

GWC is a partner institution of Overseas Council International (OCI). OCI is a 501(c)(3) organization. All gifts to OCI on GWC’s behalf are tax-deductible for US income tax purposes and administered and disbursed under the control of the Overseas Council International Board of Directors. Donation information is stated on the OCI website.
OCI guarantees us as a bona fides educational institution in terms of US tax law, making the College eligible for funds direct from foundations and trusts.

GWC also enjoys membership of The American Fund for Charities, which is a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organization. Donors to The American Fund for Charities can suggest where they would like their donation to go. Normally the Fund retains a handling commission of 7.5% on the first $10,000, 5% on the next $90,000, 2.5% of the remainder.
