THE SURROUNDS

Across the way, to the south of the campus, can be found Muizenberg Beach, with Surfer's Corner (a hot surf spot). A coastal meander through to Kalk Bay offers views of False Bay and, in season, whales, dolphins and seals.

A view of
Zandvlei

To the north lies Zandvlei, a natural lagoon, which is used for recreational purposes (sailing, canoeing, paddle skiing, windsurfing). Other parts of the lagoon have been allocated as the Westlake Wetland Conservation Area, a marshland wildlife sanctuary, and the Zandvlei Bird Sanctuary.

Historical sites of a post colonial era abound: the Natale Labia Museum, the SAPS Museum, De Post Huys, Rhodes' Cottage, and Muizenberg Station to name but a few. Other places of interest are the Toy Museum, the Lindbergh Arts Foundation, the Old Barn Theatre and the Masque Theatre.

The Muizenberg area is an interesting one. Here old colonial Cape Town meets the new South Africa. The quaintness of the area stems from its colonial history; the vibrancy of the community is the evidence of a nation in development. From being one of South Africa's premier resort areas, Muizenberg declined from the sixties to the nineties, but is now undergoing a renaissance. Muizenberg is a good place to meet Africa. English, French, Portugese, Afrikaans, Zulu,Xhosa: you will hear them all in its streets.
